Arao
Arao by F. Estrañi
In December 2006, when she was sailing near the coast of Sri Lanka en route from Kakinada (India) to Durban (South Africa) with 14,000 MT of rice, she suffered an engine breakdown and anchored near the city of Mullaitivu. On December 23, she was assaulted by Tamil rebels, who took the entire crew ashore, although they were later handed over to the Red Cross. To bring her closer to land, they cut the anchor chain, and then the ship drifted until she was grounded on the beach. There the rice was robbed, as well as all kinds of equipment and materials. At the same time she served as a base for attacks against government forces. In 2009 she was captured by these forces and shortly later the war ended.
